HarperCollinsCanada launches new imprint

TORONTO—HarperCollinsCanada announced today the launch of HarperAvenue, a new imprint in its publishing program. HarperAvenue will publish adult fiction and non-fiction books that capture readers with strong storytelling and unique, memorable voices, and will feature “must-read” works by Canadian and international authors whose stories are recognizable for their high quality and the satisfying reading experience they offer.

Launching in September 2014, HarperAvenue’s inaugural list will include fiction from David Nicholls, Caitlin Moran, Emily St. John Mandel, Jacqueline Baker and Graeme Simsion, and non-fiction from Amy Poehler and Andrea Martin, to be followed in the winter of 2015 by works from Susan Juby and Emily Urquhart.

“HarperAvenue will give further shape and focus to an exciting part of our Canadian publishing program by highlighting books that speak directly to readers’ desire for compelling storytelling,” said Iris Tupholme, VP, Executive Publisher and Editor-in-Chief at HarperCollinsCanada. “Featuring books that readers will fall in love with and recommend to their friends, HarperAvenue gives special positioning to a select group of titles within the larger framework of one of the largest and most successful publishers in the country.”

The name HarperAvenue draws its inspiration from HarperCollinsCanada’s decades-long history of publishing great stories. The first location of Wm. Collins & Sons Limited in Canada was the wing of a large Toronto house located at 53 Avenue Road. There, in the early 1940s, Collins published its first Canadian-authored books. Years later, in 1989, the newly merged Harper and Collins moved back into the neighbourhood, taking offices at the Hazelton Lanes development at 55 Avenue Road. While the office address may have changed, HarperCollins has always maintained its commitment to connecting Canadian readers with great books. HarperAvenue celebrates this tradition.

Known worldwide for the quality of its list, HarperCollinsCanada is the proud home of many award-winning and bestselling authors, including Canadian authors Emma Donoghue, Lawrence Hill, Heather O’Neill, Charlotte Gray, Thomas King, Frances Itani, David Bergen, Dan Vyleta and Helen Humphreys as well as international writers Jonathan Franzen, Marilynne Robinson, Paul Harding, Michael Cunningham, Michel Faber, Richard Ford and Hilary Mantel.
