HarperCollins signs Jean E. Pendziwol for debut adult novel

Thunder Bay author gets worldwide attention at auction

THE LIGHT KEEPER'S DAUGHTERS, by children’s author Jean E. Pendziwol, will be published by HarperCollins in Canada in summer 2017. The novel, Pendziwol’s adult debut, sold at auction to 11 countries and is about the relationship between a troubled teenager and an elderly woman reflecting on her own secret-filled childhood on an island in Lake Superior.

“That so many of the world’s finest publishers were drawn to this novel is testament to its wide appeal,” said Iris Tupholme, Senior Vice President and Executive Publisher at HarperCollins in Canada. “I particularly love that so many readers will become familiar with Lake Superior through this story. In The Light Keeper’s Daughters, the lake almost becomes a character in itself, changeable yet constant, whose shores provide both safety and isolation.”

“I have been so moved by the response to The Light Keeper’s Daughters from editors and publishers around the world,” said Jean E. Pendziwol. “Readers from Germany to China have been touched by the icy waters of Lake Superior, drawn into lives of the characters whose paths have been carved by the wind and waves, whose voices linger in the mists of the boreal forest. It is humbling and overwhelming, and such a thrill to share with them this story of strength and identity, of love and loss, of family and friendship, and bring a little piece of Canada to the world.”

Jean E. Pendziwol is the author of the bestselling and critically acclaimed No Dragons for Tea: Fire Safety for Kids (and Dragons). She was shortlisted for a 2013 Governor General’s Literary Award for Once Upon a Northern Night, also a finalist for the 2014 TD Canadian Children’s Literature Award. Jean lives in the shadow of the Nor’Wester Mountains in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Her books have been translated into many languages, including Korean, Japanese, French and Turkish.

The publishing deal for Canada and elsewhere was arranged by Jenny Bent at the Bent Agency in New York.
