HarperCollins Announces Book by Candy Palmater

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Toronto; August 16, 2017)

HarperCollins Publishers Ltd. has acquired Canadian rights to radio and television personality Candy Palmater’s first book to be published in spring 2019.

Most recently the host of The Candy Palmater Show on CBC Radio One and a panelist on CBC’s Canada Reads, Palmater is one of Canada’s most beloved broadcasters, speakers, and comedians.

“Candy Palmater is a unique voice in Canada and one we are sorely in need of hearing. She combines humour, fierce intelligence, and a powerful message of self-acceptance,” said Jennifer Lambert, Editorial Director at HarperCollins Publishers Ltd.

“I'm very proud and excited to be embarking on this new book with HarperCollins,” added Candy Palmater. “I can't wait to share my story with Canadians who are currently so hungry for alternative perspectives.”

Palmater, the youngest of seven children, grew up on a secluded mountain in northern New Brunswick, the daughter of a white mother and a Mi’kmaw father. Shortly after her birth, Palmater’s father, newly sober, opened a motorcycle shop where she spent most of her time when not in school. In her 20s, Palmater worked at Tim Hortons to save up for the Schulich School of Law at Dalhousie University where she graduated as valedictorian of her class. She went on to work in Labour and Aboriginal Law but soon realized it wasn’t the right place for her. It was then that she launched herself into the entertainment industry. In addition to hosting her own national radio show on CBC Radio One, Palmater is the creator and star of the national, multiple award-winning APTN television series The Candy Show, a columnist for Chatelaine, a columnist for CBC Radio One's The Next Chapter with Shelagh Rogers and a regular panelist on CBC's Because News.

The foundation of Palmater’s book will be her unconventional and inspirational life story which often forms the basis of the talks she gives around the globe. As in all her work, her message about the importance of kindness, self-esteem, and believing in our self-worth will inform her writing.

While they await her book, fans will be able to hear more of Candy Palmater when she launches a new podcast later this year. Palmater’s book deal was brokered by literary agent Rick Broadhead at Rick Broadhead & Associates.
