I hope all is well with you and your loved ones during these times.
I am delighted to have been given this opportunity to sincerely thank you for all your incredible work and dedication in supporting The Perfect Girlfriend in Canada. It is hard to fully explain the amazing feeling of seeing a book I had written out in the world and on bookshelves. I feel so grateful to all the brilliant teams who have supported The Perfect Girlfriend and believed in me along the way. It really was a dream come true to have one book published, so to now have two (The Last Wife is on sale today!) is unbelievably exciting.
When it came to writing The Last Wife, I knew that I wanted to create another difficult character; however, she had to be different to Juliette in The Perfect Girlfriend. Marie, the protagonist of The Last Wife, began to form in my mind when a friend and I were setting up a book-group in our local area. Until then, I had never been a part of a book club (when I was cabin crew at the airline, it was difficult to commit to anything regularly). While I was researching book groups online, I came across some stories that suggested some were not always friendly and that really surprised me. I imagined how someone with Marie’s nature would go about trying to join a firmly established group.
I also wanted to set the book in a fictitious village, within a forest, to work with the idea of Marie being trapped in the woods once she set about stealing her friend’s life. I explored themes of envy, trust, how well we can ever truly know someone, and what could perhaps influence someone like Marie to yearn for a particular lifestyle to such an extent that she then makes questionable decisions rather than fully live her own life.
Thank you once again for all your kind support and also for taking the time to read this.
Wishing you all the very best,
