<b>J. G. Ballard</b> was born in 1930 in Shanghai, where his father was a businessman. After internment in a civilian prison camp, his family returned to England after the Second World War. His novels include <i>Empire of the Sun</i>, <i>High-Rise</i>, <i>Cocaine Nights</i> and <i>Super-Cannes</i>. His autobiography <i>Miracles of Life</i> was published in 2008 to much acclaim. He died in 2009.
<b>Chris Beckett</b> is an archivist at the British Library. He catalogued the papers of J.G. Ballard in 2010–11.
