About the Book

In September 2015 Joe Hockey's political career was brought to a dramatic end when Malcolm Turnbull successfully challenged Prime Minister Tony Abbott for the Liberal Leadership. Hockey was told by Turnbull he would no longer be Treasurer - a deal had been done with Scott Morrison. Hockey, who was at one point the preferred leader of the Liberal Party, had decided to leave behind his hopes of ever being Prime Minister. But days after felling the Abbott/Hockey Government, Turnbull offered the former Treasurer a new role: as Australia's Ambassador to the United States.

Based in Washington DC, Hockey would immediately find himself in the middle of the historic 2016 Presidential campaign between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Despite strong objections from his own government, Hockey reached out to the Trump campaign. Betting on the electoral appeal of the brash anti-establishment candidate, Hockey was able to secure priceless early diplomatic contacts with the Trump campaign and what would become his administration.

In these first hand accounts inside President Trump's chaotic White House, America Calling reveals for the first time the aftermath of the leaked phone call between the US President and Prime Minister Turnbull. Hockey recalls his personal dealings with Trump on the golf course, which included the President blaming Australia for the Mueller Investigation that almost ended his Presidency. He also details his relationships with the cavalcade of characters who came in and out of Trump's Oval Office including; Steve Bannon, Stephen Miller and Mick Mulvaney.

America Calling describes Hockey's relationship with the Obama Administration as Treasurer and as Ambassador, including detailing the real reason the ADM takeover of GrainCorp was rejected and the secret deal with Obama that almost saw Congress approve the controversial Trans-Pacific Partnership.

Using his political experience Hockey also writes about his contacts with some of the biggest names in business and entertainment. These include his role in getting Rupert Murdoch to speak at the G20 and have him seated next to British Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne, who was desperate to lobby the News Corp boss over his paper's support of Scottish Independence.

Time and again, Hockey was able to get a better deal for Australia despite other close allies being hit with trade tariffs or even having their ambassadors sent home. Hockey was able to achieve a series of meetings with Australian Prime Ministers, including a rare State Dinner at the White House. Despite the endless drama of the Trump years, with Joe Hockey in Washington the 100 year Australia/US Alliance was strengthened by the time of President Joe Biden's arrival. America Calling captures Hockey's unorthodox (and highly effective) approach to politics and diplomacy that has made him the envy of ambassadors and policymakers.
