Bestselling author Emma Donoghue’s next novel, The Wonder, to be published by HarperCollins Publishers in 2016

TORONTO – Wednesday, October 14, 2015 – Iris Tupholme, SVP and Executive Publisher of HarperCollins Publishers, announced today the acquisition of a new novel, THE WONDER, by award-winning, bestselling author Emma Donoghue. Donoghue was represented in the negotiation by Caroline Davidson of Caroline Davidson Literary Agency. Donoghue’s new novel is slated for simultaneous English-language publication in the fall of 2016.

“A new novel from Emma Donoghue is always a publishing event and, with The Wonder, Emma has created a spellbinding work of fiction,” said Iris Tupholme. “Compelling from start to finish, The Wonder is classic storytelling: an intimate and mysterious tale of two strangers who come together and change each other’s lives forever. At the heart of this novel is a young girl, Anna, whose life is ebbing away but whose continued existence calls into question the power of love and faith, doubt and forgiveness. Told with the same simple grace and tension that made Room a huge bestseller, The Wonder is a masterpiece of contemporary literature.”

Set in 1850s rural Ireland, THE WONDER tells the riveting story of Anna, a girl who has stopped eating but mysteriously remains alive, and Lib, the English nurse charged with determining whether Anna is a fraud.

A brilliant examination of doubt, faith, and what nourishes us body and soul, THE WONDER is also a powerful psychological thriller—a story of love pitted against evil in its many masks—and of a child’s murder threatening to occur in slow motion before our eyes. “I couldn't be happier to be bringing out THE WONDER—my return to my homeland of Ireland—with the team at HarperCollins Publishers, who have published so many of my books so beautifully,” said Donoghue.

About the author:

Emma Donoghue migrates between genres, writing literary history, biography, stage and radio plays as well as fairy tales and short stories.  She is best known for her novel Room, an international bestseller and finalist for the 2010 Man Booker, Commonwealth, and Orange Prizes, with a critically acclaimed film adaption, scripted by Donoghue—starring Brie Larson, Joan Allen, William H. Macy and Jacob Tremblay—in theatres this month. Room, has sold over 150,000 copies in Canada and remained on the bestseller lists of both the Globe and Mail and New York Times for several months.  Movie-tie-in mass market and trade paperback editions of Room have just been released.

Donoghue’s other critically acclaimed novels range from the historical (Frog Music, Slammerkin, Life Mask, The Sealed Letter) to the contemporary (Stir-Fry, Hood, Landing).

Born in Dublin in 1969, Emma Donoghue is an Irish emigrant twice over: she spent eight years in Cambridge doing a PhD in eighteenth-century literature before moving to London, Ontario, where she lives with her partner and their two children.

The Wonder will be published by Picador in the UK, and Little Brown in the US, and will be released in audio format by Hachette Audio simultaneously with the Hardcover publication.
