HarperCollins signs Amanda Lang to second book

TORONTO—HarperCollins announced today that Amanda Lang has signed a deal for a second book, following the success of her bestselling debut, The Power of Why.

'The Power of Why explored the connection between curiosity and success - basically the importance of asking the right questions. My new book focuses on "the virtue of discomfort," and aims to help readers and businesses teach themselves the skills they need to listen to the answers. That requires us to let ourselves live with ambiguity, and hard truths, in a way that we aren't wired for. But we can learn the secret of 'good pain' mentally, in the same way that athletes recognize the 'good pain' of a hard workout. The benefit of doing it is more success in business and at home.'

"Amanda is a terrific writer, a skilled researcher, and has the incredible ability to weave practical insight into a compelling story," said Brad Wilson, Editorial Director at HarperCollins in Canada. "She has one of the most curious minds in the business, and her writing surprises, enlightens, and resonates across boundaries."

Award-winning business journalist Amanda Lang has been covering business in North America for 20 years. For six years Lang was CBC's senior business correspondent, reporting for its flagship nightly news program, The National, and host of The Exchange with Amanda Lang, a daily business program airing on CBC News Network.

In her years covering business for newspapers and television she has interviewed many of the world's leading business and political figures, covering in depth technology, the dot-com asset bubble, the credit crisis and great recession, and the Euro-zone crisis. Her knowledge and experience brings unique context to the business stories and the characters in the business world.

Lang studied Architecture at the University of Manitoba, before becoming a journalist. Her first job in journalism was for the Globe and Mail, and subsequently Lang joined the Financial Post newspaper, where she fist held the technology beat, before she became the paper's New York correspondent. In New York she made the leap to television, where she first was part of the team that launched BNN (ROB TV) in 1999 and before long wound up at CNN as a reporter and anchor. At CNN she covered the stock market, reporting from the New York Stock Exchange.

Lang returned to Canada in 2002 to re-join BNN, creating a daily television show with Kevin O'Leary called SqueezePlay. The two moved to CBC in 2009, and co-hosted The Lang and O'Leary Exchange for five years before hosting The Exchange with Amanda Lang.

The Power of Why was nominated for the National Business Book Award. Amanda Lang's new book will publish in the fall of 2016.
