As an astronomer, Michael Bradens job is to protect a giant
telescope from the elements at the legendary Palomar Observatory in southern
California. But one night, in a midnight storm, a young woman is found on the
mountain, smeared with blood and wearing only a flimsy party dress. She is mute,
or so it appears.
Michael knows he must shield her too. And as Elenas story
begins to reveal itself, stretching tautly from Havana to Mexico and back to
Palomar, Michael becomes engulfed in a firestorm both psychological and
physical, where the past relentlessly pursues the present in a dark race for
love, redemption and a new life.
Set both on the border between California and Mexicowhere
waves of immigrants and criminals overwhelm the mountain with kidnapping, secret
identities and murderand in the small Canadian town of Penetanguishene, The
Truth About the Night beautifully reflects another kind of violence,
where entire galaxies must be destroyed to create new life and order. A stunning
blend of superb storytelling and cinematic dialogue with a powerful exploration
of the fragile truths that connect us all, Martyn Burke delivers a novel that is
as provocative as it is entertaining.

The Globe and Mail
"A beautifully written novel. Burke ties Penetanguishene and Palomar together with light."
Quill & Quire
"Burke has a knack for creating engrossing psychologically warped characters. And he knows how to keep you guessing until the end -- mandatory in a thriller of any stripe."

Reader Reviews from First Look
Without getting into all of the "threads" which are woven into the whole by Dr Herra and by the explosive love story of Michael and Elena let me say that I found this a fascinating and thought-provoking novel.

Martyn Burke intricately weaves a multi-layered story full of colourful characters. He takes the reader on a soulful journey through Southern California, Mexico, Georgian Bay, distant galaxies and back again. Wonderfully researched. A stunning balance of beautifully descriptive language and just enough adrenaline to make this a real page-turner. Best read in ages! No doubt a future bestseller and award winner!

Martyn Burke's The Truth About the Night is a compelling story of mystery, romance and the tragedy of ordinary family life. The story ranges from Penetang to Tijuana with several stops at Palomar for an astronomy lesson. Drug smuggling, illegal immigration, the Catholic Church and Canadian politics all play a part in the tangled plot of this well told tale.
Peter (Chatham, ON)
I enjoyed this book very much. Martyn Burke writes in such a way to make the reader feel they are right there in the story. Being a Canadian, I especially liked the references to the Canadian towns and cities.

The Truth About the Night is a mysterious and captivating novel written by Martyn Burke.
Even with the slightly slow start of the novel, it cannot be denied as a true jewel. The plot is tremendously intriguing, characters mysterious, and yet it is still a realistic story. The detailed writing style makes the reader feel as if they themselves are witnessing a real-life event. I would recommend this novel to mature readers because they would be able to connect with the plot more and therefore enjoy it to a better extent. Definitely a job well done, Mr. Burke!

This book will appeal to anyone who has an interest in astronomy, psychiatry, or good mysteries. This book kept me engaged until the very end, and left me thinking long beyond then. Burke's writing is beautiful, without being cumbersome, and the many stories he tells within this novel are compelling.

Burke has a flair for describing his characters and their surroundings that makes you feel as though you are watching the story live. I enjoyed this novel, the first from Burke that I have read and hopefully not my last! The plots twists kept me on my toes.

I enjoyed this novel. Full of suspense and mystery. I also like the way the author paints a picture of the landscape with his words, both in geographical descriptions and the climate of the emotions.
Well worth the read!

Although I am not a big fan of thriller/mystery genre Martyn Burke's storytelling is intriguing, and I can appreciate the way he can built suspense. I enjoyed the back story, and learning how Michel comes to terms with his past and his brother's illness.
