Victoria, 61, wishes that she could shroud her life in the ghosts of the past, as she reads and re-reads letters from Kola, a man she met and fell in love with 30 years ago in Toronto. Now living in London, England—the last place her disappeared lover was seen—Victoria exists in a safe emotional void. Working as a chef for a fledgling organic business, she prefers to obsess over genetically modified tomatoes than to accept the caring attention of her friend and sometime lover, Lenny. When her sister dies in Guyana, leaving behind an eight-year-old son, Victoria finds herself his guardian. In her new role, she is suddenly forced to confront both the death of her past and the frighteningly real promise of the future.
This Body is a tender portrait of two people whose losses radiate and reflect against one another, each searching for truth, for love and for identity. Moving effortlessly and evocatively between London, Toronto and Guyana, the novel is enriched by recipes, letters and legends, revealing the traditions and tensions of a multicultural and politically volatile world.
