Pig Island

Journalist Joe Oakes makes a living exposing supernatural
hoaxes. A born skeptic, he believes everything has a rational explanation. But
when he visits a secretive religious community on a remote Scottish island,
everything he thought he knew is overturned. Questions mount: Why has the
community been accused of Satanism? What has happened to their leader, Pastor
Malachi Dove? And perhaps most important, why will no one discuss the strange
apparition seen wandering the lonely beaches of Pig Island? A confrontation, and
its violent and bloody aftermath, is so catastrophic that it forces Oakes to
question the nature of evil and whether he might not be responsible for a
terrible crime himself.
In this compulsive and disturbing new novel, Britains Queen of
Fear dares her readers to face their own fears head-on. Already a bestseller in
the UK, Pig Island displays Mo Hayders transcendent brand of suspense in
a book that wont give you nightmaresbecause you wont be able to sleep.

Critical Praise for
Pig Island
"Mo Hayder has a profound ability to shock and surprise her readers, and Pig Island surpasses anything she has written before. She's the bravest writer I know."
Karin Slaughter
"Hayder has always had the unrivalled ability to conjure up grotesqueries that chill, but here she outdoes herself."
The Observer
"Hayder's writing is, as ever, briskly paced and fluid."
The Times (UK)
"[Pig Island is] profoundly creepy and creepily convincing
. Though gruesome enough to satisfy even the most hardcore horror fan, this rigorously imagined novel is also full of apt (if bleak) detail and graced with a perfect plot twist at story's end. Hayder offers both a riveting story and a nuanced, distinctly modern look at secrecy and publicity, belief and skepticism, normal and taboo, (in)sight and blindness"

Reader Reviews from First Look
Pig Island has you on the edge of your seat from the very first word. As you go through the book, you start turning the pages quicker and your heart starts beating faster. You can't wait to figure out how it's going to end and you get thrown for such a complete loop at the end you don't even realize what's hit you until it's over. Pig Island is Hayder’s best. But it's not for the faint of heart. Any horror/mystery fan will love this book.

This book was a maze of twists and turns and you never know what awaits! It starts out terrifying in a supernatural way and ends in shock and disbelief!

This is a thriller like no other that I have read. Hayder has a unique, appealing writing style while creating a plot that constantly keeps the reader guessing. The protagonist, Joe Oakes, does not take himself too seriously even though he is involved in some very sombre and bizarre events. Real-life challenges in his personal relationship with his wife give him a well-rounded character as well. This book keeps you guessing about what will happen next. It will keep you up at night!

I finished this book five days ago and it is still haunting me. I am huge a fan of suspense, gore, thrillers, mysteries, etc. - and Pig Island had it all.
One thing I really loved about the book was the character development. The “devil” of Pig Island was an amazingly deep and freaky character. Just like people in real life, the characters of Pig Island evolved as the plot thickened. There was definitely an “ah-ha, now it all makes sense” ending. As advertised, you won’t be able to sleep while reading this book. In part because it is nerve racking and a bit scary, but also because you can’t wait to see how Mo Hayder will tie all those loose strings, crazy people and bizarre circumstances together.

This book certainly did send some chills up and down my spine and invoked a few very odd dreams.
I really enjoyed the fast pace of Mo's writing style. She sends you on quite a whirlwind of a ride.
I can only begin to imagine the thoughts that Joe was thinking throughout his entire journey.
If you are willing to be chilled to the bone then this is most definitely the book for you to pick up.

Quite amusing and clever! The main character talks to the reader and brings a sense of humor that adds light to the story. Great book!
Marla (Calgary, AB)
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book! Its suspenseful nature kept me up reading very late. The unexpected twists made me eager to finish reading and even the end of the book left me mulling it over for awhile.
