Pubs were once a place where you could always guarantee good, simple, cheap food and a great Sunday roast, but when the steak houses arrived and the new wave of ghastly fast food and takeaways took it′s grip, these mecca′s of British food started to die out and the good home cooking from the pub kitchens was replaced by bought in, frozen food, which was more to quench the alcohol hunger pangs than to satisfy a discerning palate.
Then came Gastro pubs. Great to start with; talented young cooks, without the financial backing to open a restaurant, but with the foresight to serve great home cooking in comfortable surroundings. This however had a backlash, with people trying to serve restaurant food at restaurant prices in bashed up old pubs and the trend set in.
These have now almost had their day and great British pubs are rediscovering their roots and getting back to basics. Good honest cooking, using quality ingredients, cooked with love and attention and reminding us of the comfort food of our youth.
GORDON RAMSAY′S GREAT BRITISH PUB FOODis about relaxed, homely and comforting cooking. Packed full of sumptious and hearty traditional British pub food recipes, and insightful information into the history of the great British pub.
