Helen loves Matthew. Shes sure of it. Otherwise, why would she
have endured years as his faithful mistress? Years without a full night spent
together, years of waiting to be called the Mrs.
But when someday becomes today and Matthew leaves his wife,
Sophie, Helen suddenly realizes she isnt so keen. Matthew is mopey and messy
and impossible to get rid of. So Helen decides she needs a plan:
Stop shaving my armpits. And bikini line. Pick
holes in the way he dresses. When that
fails, new plan: Accidentally, on
purpose, bump into Sophie. Fake a new identity and befriend her. Begin to really
like Sophie (unplanned). Befriend Matthews two teenage daughters.
Unsuccessfully. Let everyone at work believe that another co-worker is the real
home-wrecker. Watch your whole plan go wrong. Absolutely. Terribly. Wrong.
With her caustic wit, intelligently drawn characters and a story
thats a terrific contemporary twist on the classic other woman tale,
Getting Rid of Matthew
is a highly entertaining, completely satisfying
read.

Critical Praise for
Getting Rid of Matthew
"Sparkling and unpredictable, a brilliant first novel."
ELLE (UK)
"Jane Fallon injects a smart edge into the chick-lit genre."
InStyle magazine
"This witty first novel is a complete winner. It's comic, touching and the narrative races along at breakneck speed. Far from being a hard-hearted monster who breaks up a family and then grows bored with her lover, Helen emerges as a fallible character who wants to make amends for the mess she's createdoften with catastrophic results. . . . Hilarious."
Daily Express
"A punchy piece of inverted chicklit."
The Big Issue (UK)
"An entertaining, relaxing read with comic scenes that capture the horrors of office life mixed in with perceptive comments on relationships and some memorable characters. Within the first fifty pages, for instance you're already hating Helen's spineless, two-timing married lover, Matthew, and looking forward to the next appearance from his wonderfully foul-mouthed ten year old, Claudia. . . . Very much worth a look."
The Word (UK)
"Clever and unpredictable, with writing that clips along at a TV pace.... Fallon has turned typical chick lit on its head."
Calgary Herald
"Getting Rid of Matthew is the Brit Chick Lit Hit of the year. Jane Fallon leads us through a hysterical maze of mistaken identities, office high-jerks and true love....sickness.Immensely relatable and gently moving it will leave you full and smiling like the best of novels do. A dazzling debut."
Jamie Lee Curtis
"A hugely satisfying novel of tables being turned.Smart and funny, it has an underlying tinge of melancholy which adds depth and resonance plus an understanding of just how complicated human relationships are"
Elizabeth Buchan, author of Revenge of the Middle-Aged Woman
"This is better than reading your best friend's diary, it's like reading your worst enemies diary; which is of course impossible to resist."
Adele Parks, author of bestselling Another Womans Shoes
"Forget chick-lit and hen-lit -- Jane Fallons first novel is sharp, funny, tell-it-like-it-is lit. Getting Rid of Matthew is an incredibly accomplished debut, with not a single misplaced word in an honest, hilarious and yet searingly real portrayal of love and friendship. Turn off the TV and pull up the duvet: you wont be able to put it down until youve finished it."
Cathy Kelly, bestselling author of Best of Friends
Reader Reviews from First Look
'Getting Rid of Matthew' pushes the relationship envelope as you fall in love with the strangest of characters. Most "other woman" stories portray her as a dirty homewrecker who just wants to break up a happy marriage. This not so with Helen. You fall in love with her as you learn about her dependency on a relationship and willingness to please others. This book is perfect for anyone who wants a real, down-to-earth turn on a boy meets girl story.

This book was very engaging. There were times when I didn't know whether to sympathize with Helen or shake her. The book was hilarious. I could hardly contain myself. There is a lot of hilarious dysfunction in the book - it is a thoroughly good read - perfect for that weekend on the beach, or to curl up in front of the fire and eat chocolates and indulge.
Pat (Guelph, ON)
The story is real, raw, and completely believable. Fallon gives you insight into the lives of two different women, who shouldn't like each other, but do. No one is painted as the saint or the demon. Their humanity is what makes the story so interesting and it will suck you in completely I read this book in two sittings!
Emmanuelle (Innisfil, ON)
I couldn't put the book down. Very funny. I look forward more from Jane Fallon
Elaine (Whitecourt, AB)
"Getting Rid of Matthew" was a hilarious, and insightful, look at what happens when even the mistress realizes that the two-timing husband is not worth it. A new perspective into the whole mistress idea!
Greta (Toronto, ON)
Great story, and a good twist on the typical romance.
