Misha Angrist
I was born and raised in Pittsburgh PA. After college in Indiana (where I met my future wife), I hung around and played in a band for a while. I went to Cincinnati to train as a genetic counselor. By the time I was done, I realized I would be a terrible genetic counselor but I enjoyed genetic research. I went back home to Pittsburgh to do a PhD at Pitt. My advisor moved to Case Western in Cleveland and I followed him. I got my doctorate in 1996 and hung around to do a postdoc. I became restless again and took a job at a market research firm covering the biotech industry. It was a miserable job, but it gave me time to do an MFA in writing on the side. After this I had a brief foray in biotech finance and day trading, neither of which went well. At that point I took a job as science editor at Duke University, where I had done a fellowship earlier and where my former chair was setting up a genomics institute. I worked as science editor until 2008, when I accepted a faculty position at Duke, where I am happily employed today.
