About the Book

You CAN take practical steps to avoid dementia -- and this book from an Australian expert shows you how.
Within twenty years, dementia is set to overtake heart disease as the number one cause of death in Australia. Recent studies show that almost half our adult population already have a family member or friend with the illness. those statistics seem rather grim, but there is GOOD NEWS! We don't need to accept dementia as an inevitable part of ageing. the main forms of dementia affecting people today are not inherited, and there are practical steps you can take right now that will not only help prevent dementia but also improve the overall health of your mind and body.In MAINtAIN YOUR BRAIN, leading Australian expert Dr Michael Valenzuela addresses all the common (and not-so-common) questions people have about dementia, and explains complex cutting-edge medical discoveries in a way that is clear and easy to understand. His practical advice is based on years of first-hand research and experience, and covers everything from blood pressure, diet and cholesterol to mental activity and physical exercise. Featuring plenty of simple tips, summaries and even recipes, this book is essential reading for anyone who wants to enjoy a healthy, active and happy life well into old age.

Critical Praise

The author of this book was part of a team that presented the "Preventing Dementia" MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) through the University of Tasmania and since this is a subject in which I'm very interested, I thought I would try out his book and I'm pleased I did. It complimented the course nicely, but I think it would have been interesting in any case.
Nothing, obviously, will eliminate the possibility of getting dementia, but there are strong indicators that there are ways of reducing our risk and increasing the capacity of our brains. Very interesting.

This is not a book with neat little tricks and games to "keep your brain fit"... Dr. Valenzuela presents us with known facts and studies-based findings about the human brain and it's age-related diseases such as Alzheimer's and how we might reduce or delay our risks of developing them. There's a plethora of scientific neuro-jargon, all of which I have forgotten (maybe I should get one of those books that this is not). However, if you can persist through it, it is quite informative and gives all-rounded suggestions for keeping our brains healthy. Incidentally, they will probably keep the rest of yourself healthy suggesting a synergistic relationship between our minds, bodies and souls. I couldn't agree more! Needless to say, I have to read this again sometime ...
